Side lights, needed or not?

Postby Lurch » Sun Jan 08, 2017 10:45 am

What's the actual position on sidelights?
Ideally I'd just want to fit Lucas bullet style indicators on the front with no sidelights,
I'm never going to drive without the main 7in lamps on during dark hours, so is this kosher to do away with the sidelights?
Alternatively I suppose I could use the 7in style lamps that used to have the extra dim 'parking' lamp option.

I thought I'd probably have to do something like that as no doubt having sides is a requirement for mot even though they aren't actually necessary and could be abolished with no real harm done!
Out of interest where did you get your lamp units?

Mini units have the in-built side light and are a direct replacement for the Minor sealed beams, you can get a set on Ebay for around £30

Good stuff I will have a look!
Would I be correct in thinking that all mini lamps would have this ?

Pretty sure they are, make sure you go for the domed lens as the flat fronted ones dont look right.

I drive with my side lights on all the time. Makes other road users pay a bit more attention.

Mogs have no real crumple zone and I've also found that other road users misjudge my speed as slower than it is and tend to nip out in front. Anybody else noticed that? It looks old so it must be slow?

I'm always driving round in central London and it's environs, there's no way I could go round with just sidelights!
You have to be as ruthless as everyone else up there and assume , usually correctly, that they're all half asleep idiots!

You keep the headlights on then?

Presume you have an alternator.

I don't have a load of wicky-wicky CDs radios satnavs and hocus-pocus electro gizmos fitted!
It just runs what came out of the factory quite happily I'm glad to say.
Possibly modern halogen bulbs might want more power if I fitted them, currently have pre focus bulb set up that's presumably original to the motor.
