This is just a mad thought and not bing seriously considerd, at least yet. :drunken:
When driving with the heater on, most of the time I don't use the fan as the air flows through from the hole by the engin radiator rather vigously, the thought occured that if you diverted that air into the air intake you should get a power and mpg boost as it would act as an air scoop, there's space on the other side of the radiator for another hole so it wouldn't be a hard mod.

The engine would like the charge of cold air down the 'ram pipe' but little, if any, benefit from a ram effect - and you would have to be moving pretty quick to generate any. A better way of getting more air in is to fit a less restrictive filter - like a K&N. Or a turbo 8)

Colder air makes the car run better as more oxygen per cc, but to make any real use then the mixture needs to be adjusted accordingly and with pure Ram Air it is varying with vehicle speed.

Moderns achieve this by measuring air flow, temperature and exhaust and adjust the mixture accordingly many times a second.

Having the air intake above the exhaust is not ideal, so you would probably see a small benefit bringing fresh clean air into an airbox, inside which you have a filter and maybe a radiused stub to smooth the intake.

Whether the gains are really worth the effort I would not know.

You'd get a better result from a ram-pipe/bell-mouth thingy and a better air filter. Up to 5% air flow increase. Not too hard to make from an ali tube with a 7 degree wedge pushed into it in your vice. Tap the big end over at least 180 degrees. As Custard says, cold air is best, so long as you don't get carb icing. Morris sold kits of carb heaters to deal with this issue.

Your theory is OK, although the engine sucks in 1500-ish litres per minute at normal speed so the ram effect from a 30mph drive will be small.
