PLEASE HELP!! -- FIRST GEAR POPS-OUT - 948cc

Postby Flower » Sun May 01, 2016 7:43 pm

Hello everybody!
I need your help, please!
First gear is popping out and can't afford a ribcase tranny.
Can someone PLEASE help me get the parts I need to rebuild my 948cc smoothy?
Any expert suggestions?
I'm located in Los Angeles.
Please???

Sorry Flower, can't help. There are plenty of suppliers over here in the UK but I am sure there are members who have knowledge of suppliers your side of the pond who will pop along later. But in the meantime :D welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the MMO. :) Under what conditions does it pop out of 1st gear - under acceleration, while coasting along in traffic, or when decelerating? And what happens if you try holding it in gear - a regular clonking noise probably means a tooth missing off the 1st gear cog.

It may just be a simple case of a worn remote gearchange linkage - does the gear lever feel very loose and floppy?

Alternatively, it may be a loose bolt securing the 1st/2nd gear selector fork onto the sliding selector rod - remove the side inspection hatch to check the tightness of the 7/16" bolts that are used to secure the forks to the rods; they do sometimes work loose, resulting in the gear not being quite selected fully.

Thank you so much Maurice!
I will check what you suggest.
All gears in the car were OK.
First popped out after a stop.
Doesn't stay in, I have not tried to force it. No noise or grinding.
