The originals had started splitting in the middle of the seat panel...
so time for some new ones. Originals were a fairly deep shade of red judging by the bits that were covered, I didn't like the shade of red or dark red/maroon ones sold by Newton Commercial so went hunting on the interwebs.
Martrim sell a shade called Matador Red, a sample was duly requested and it came up as a good match for the original colour.
An investment in vinyl, cushion beading, scrim foam and decent thread came up with enough to redo both front seats. Once dismantled for the seat part patterns I spent £4.95 for a set of decent heavy material needles for the sewing machine and I set to work, only to find that the sewing machine was not up to the task, (not up to doing anything really, nearly thirty years old, but not old enough to be made to last!)
A scout round on a local services website led me to someone with a heavy duty machine to borrow, when I got there a bit of chatting led to the fact that he had two PCs that needed repair and was willing to swap the sewing machine for the repair, so some fettling and replacement parts and the PCs were working and I was on my way with a heavy duty Singer machine. After a couple of false starts I finished one base in an hour, and the next in 45 minutes
Need more cushion binding to complete the backs, and to start on the rear seats, but overall very happy with the result and cost. More pictures to follow of the seat backs and of the installed product in due course
