My Latest - Ex Drag Strip Pick-up

Postby MakeMinorv8 » Sun Dec 12, 2010 6:46 pm

Hi All,

I've been lurking on here for some time after introducing myself a while back!
I thought it was time to get some pics up of my latest project;-

According to the previous owner this was a drag strip warrior in the 1980's.
It used to run a supercharged 1098 with a Capri back axle.
Judging by the holes in the engine bay floor it has had various engines since then!
All the trim, wipers and most other stuff was removed to reduce weight with all the holes blanked off by rivets and aluminium sheet.
I have all the bits to put it back together but first things first, a few more mods required........and a little welding.
The chassis is totally sound inside and out though! :D

A Subaru Legacy donated the back axle for the truck.

This is now in place. Just a bit more welding to do.

Nice to see the photos, you have a neat project there!

I will follow with interest what you do. Please keep the photos coming of all the work that is done, if poss as it's being done. I'll be interested to see what and how you deal with the back end.

Happy posting! Alan

Hi and thanks for the interest. :D

After years of building cars with new chassis and numerous mods it makes a nice change to build a more standard Mog.

To keep a nice, balanced brake set-up, the same Subaru also donated it's front brakes.
I have machined the discs to fit the Marina hubs that came on the truck.
The calipers will need custom brackets making to fit.
Image

Our works has a small blasting cabinet that also comes in useful for cleaning up the front suspension parts. :)
All the front suspension has been stripped, blasted, primed and painted.
Eventually, the thick lower suspension arms will need modding so that coil-overs can be fitted.
Image
As an added bonus the up-rights still have the thicker steering arms fitted.

Cheers for now.

Martin :D

Welcome back Martin, wow thats some work you've got on-but what a great start you've made already.

All though you reckon there'll not be much welding on it-your migmate will soon clear that up.

Is it basically a 60's vehicle then ?

What engine are you going for ?

That suspension and brakes set up looks interesting-well done on the cleaning up and paint job- my, it looks good.

What are your plans for the back ? That protection frame looks awesome for the track ! What style are you going for ?

Anti-roll bar links for the Scooby axle.
Blasted, painted and fitted with...................................Poly Bushes originally meant to fit Minor eye-bolts!
I will turn up some tubes for the middle of the bushes.

Near-side suspension loosely hung off the sub-frame just to see how it sits.
Notice how close the trailing arm is to bolting upto the original spring mount! Close but not quite close enough.

Still a lot to do.............

Trailing arms modded to fit original chassis/suspension pick up points.

Fortunately both trailing arms match for length so I won't be crabbing down the road! 8)

Next up, time to fit the anti roll bar and get the mounts tack welded into place on the chassis.

Looks like the bar will need work to clear the fuel tank.
Oh well, more welding..........................

I'm currently re-inforcing the chassis ready to fit top wish-bones for the rear hubs then it is on to building the rear shock mountings.
Coming on well at the mo (if I do say so myself    )

More pics coming soon.
Thanks for looking and stay tuned!
